FORMATION OF SEASONS
FORMATION OF SEASONS –
Zeus, the king of the gods of Mount Olympus
is known to have many affairs. He wants to expand population of Olympians after
a war with Titans. Demeter who’s also an Olympian, is a goddess of fertility and
the harvest has a daughter with Zeus named Persophone. Persophone’s so
beautiful, pure and lovely that most of the Olympians have a crush on her.
Demeter, being so protective of her daughter hides her by the countryside, away
from the eyes of immortal beings and wants her daughter to remain as a divine
virgin like Athena and Armetis. Persophone’s very fond towards nature. One
bright afternoon while Persophone’s chasing butterflies, she’ll be little lost
from the group of nymphs, appointed by her mother Demeter to protect her and be
in her sight all the time. Right then, Persophone notices a rendering and
roaring sound. It’s most like a thunder, yet when she looks up, she notices
nothing but a clear sky but the earth seems to be shaking and splitting into
two. From the opening, there appeared a great Chariot. Persophone who noticed
all of it, feels strange and runs from that place by alerting the nymphs. The
person who’s riding the chariot scoops her up and drives into the cleft.
Persophone’s disappearance makes her mother devastated. Demeter, in search of
her daughter forgets her duties to harvest the land. Her despair makes the land
dry, no seeds sprouted, no buds opened, the world began to become a desert.
Zeus, who hears the news gets to know that their daughter’s with no one but the
God of Underworld, Hades. Meanwhile, Persophone and Hades get married but as a
part of deal with Zeus, Hades agrees to send Persophone back to her mother.
Hades intelligently offers Persophone some seeds of pomegranate. Persophone
takes six seeds from Hades and eats. It is believed that if the person tastes
the food in hell, must return back to hell. Hades tells Zeus as Persophone had
six seeds, she must return to hell and stay there for six months. When
Persophone goes back to her mother, she’ll be very happy and joyous that the
world began to bloom into spring. So it is believed that as Persophone stays with
her mother Demeter for six months, the cycle of birth, renewal begins and the
seasons of spring, summer emerged. When Persophone stays in underground, due to
Demeter’s despair autumn and winter formed. That’s how Greeks believed that
seasons have formed.
